Last year NHS members built 20 full-size teacher podiums.
They earned the money through fundraisers, compiled a materials list, and shopped for the items at Lowe’s. They made their own blueprint for the podium and learned to use measure and cut wood with a skill saw. They later applied stain and varnish. The podiums were presented to teachers on the last day of school.
NHS also hosted a visit for three students of the Southeast Polk High School Book Club and their teacher-librarian Carol VanHook in March. The group from provided meals, accommodations, and transportation for the travelers from Iowa whose mission was to raise funds for the Salmen library, to promote literacy awareness, and to visit St. Bernard parish to help and to learn about the devastation. The chaperone claims that “although our trip was only four days, our students are more interested in learning about other cultures, are more sympathetic to others less fortunate, and are busy thinking how they might continue to live a life as world-changers.” The group said of the hosts “though many homes were severely damaged and still under repair, they welcomed us with grace and southern hospitality.” The hosting was a joint effort by NHS students, sponsor, school librarian, and parents of Salmen High School. NHS also participated in a clean up of Northshore Beach at Carr Drive. Members of NHS and their sponsor teamed up with a group of Leadership Slidell members to clear the beach so that the beach could be restored. After the clean up, sand was trucked in and plans are in the works for a large pavilion, available for public use. This is a project of the Leadership Slidell organization. This year members of NHS have participated in tutoring activities with elementary students. Over the summer, a few students and the club’s sponsor painted a “Wall of Fame” in the main office to showcase student accomplishments. For their fundraiser this year, students sold Christmas ornaments. A second fundraiser is also being planned. Members will work on a final project for the end of the year. The project is still being planned and its requirements state that it will be one that provides meaning and usefulness to teachers and students of Salmen High School
