Salmen High School Online!

About Salmen High School... The American space adventure created instant growth and prosperity in the Slidell area in the mid-60's. To meet the increased enrollment of students, Salmen High School was created in 1965.

During the 1965 school year, the school was housed in the former Our Lady of Lourdes school building located on Second Street. At the beginning of the 1966-67 school year, the school was relocated to the present 37-acre site, a portion of which was donated by the Salmen Family Foundation. The first phase, serving grades seven through nine, was completed in the early part of 1966. Each successive year brought an additional grade, an enlarged student body, and an expanded curriculum. Eventually, the seventh and eighth grades were dropped.

The first senior class graduated from Salmen High School in 1970, the same year that we were accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school plant has been expanded to accommodate the increased enrollment, with several additions added during the 15 years that followed.

Then hurricane Katrina hit and we lost the facilities that we knew and loved, everything had damage, most completely destroyed.  The only thing that appeared repairable was the science building.  The school was demolished and the students wondered if they were to ever come back home to the Spartan campus.

When school started again Salmen shared Northshore High School’s facilities, Northshore going to school in the first part of the day, and Salmen going to school after them. Salmen’s students and faculty were very grateful, that Northshore was so welcoming and hospitable.  After the Winter/Christmas holiday Salmen reopened, now on St. Tammany Jr. High’s campus.  St. Tammany’s campus also sustained damage but had been repaired while Salmen was at Northshore.  During the time at St. Tammany temporary buildings were being constructed on Salmen’s Campus.  The students could not wait to finally be back home.

The temporary facilities are currently being used until a new Salmen High has been constructed, bigger and better than ever.  The construction has been underway for several months and everyone has high hopes that we will soon be in the new buildings.
